NLI Travelling Exhibition: Ireland From Maps
Monday 19th – Friday 23rd August
Castlepollard Library. Admission free.

The travelling exhibition ‘Ireland from Maps’ from the National Library introduces basic mapping concepts and terminology, and explores the subtext behind some of the best known maps of Ireland. The exhibition will be open as follows:

19 August – 10:30 – 17:30
20 August – 12:00 – 20:00
21 August – 10:30 – 17:30
22 August – 12:00 – 20:00
23 August – 10:30 – 17:00

Lecture: Laurence Ginnell TD
Wednesday 21st August
11am. Admission free but booking required.

Castlepollard Library presents a talk by historian Dr. Paul Hughes on Laurence Ginnell, one of two MPs turned TDs in the first Dáil. Dr. Paul Hughes is a Mullingar-based journalist and historian who was awarded a PhD in History from Queen’s University, Belfast in 2018 for his thesis entitled “The Irish Republican activism of Laurence Ginnell”, 1916 – 1923. A native of Delvin, County Westmeath, Dr. Hughes also holds an MA in History from Maynooth University. Admission free but booking is required. To book, please email cpdlib@westmeathcoco.ie.

What’s In A Name?
Thursday 22nd August
Collinstown Hall at 8pm. Admission free.

What can field names can tell us about the past? Dr Aengus Finnegan will explore our field name heritage and an exhibition will feature some of the field names recorded locally. Coordinator of the Westmeath Field Names Recording Project Dr Aengus Finnegan will give an outline the project, present some of the findings and explain how you can get involved. People will be invited to ‘fill in the gaps’ on working maps showing field names recorded to date.

Historical presentation and lecture by renowned Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) historian and author Jim Herlihy. RIC memorabilia welcome on the night. Admission €5. Not suitable for Children under 12. Car park available.
