Did you know that Sir Walter Raleigh planted Ireland’s first potatoes at Killua Castle in Clonmellon, County Westmeath? An obelisk marking the birth place of the Irish potato was erected in the grounds of the castle in 1810, but where is the fun in that?
The Clonmellon Potato Festival is a quaint, annual celebration of the humble Irish spud! This year, the family friendly event will take place on Sunday 22nd September. Expect potato peeling competitions, live music, children’s entertainment and plenty of food – all laid out in the market square.
